Adam Mott: Sex, Science, and a Life Lived Out Loud in Bracken Ridge G’day. I’m Adam. Born in the sprawl of Orange County, California, but my soul—my real, grounded, complicated soul—lives here in Bracken Ridge, Queensland. I’m a sexologist, a writer, and a bit of a professional observer of the human heart. Or maybe just a guy who’s been around the block enough times to see the patterns. I study sexuality, relationships, the weird dance we do with money and intimacy, and how we try to find love on a screen. And I write about all of it, often from my little spot here in Brisbane’s north. Look, here’s the thing. You can’t write about connection if you’ve never been disconnected. You can’t counsel on intimacy if you’ve only ever known the shallow end. My CV isn’t just a list of degrees—it’s a messy, beautiful, sometimes painful collection of experiences. I’ve been the guy who got his heart stomped on in a share house in West End. I’ve been the guy who had a transcendent, three-day thing with a traveller at a backpackers in Byron. I’ve studied the neuroscience of attraction and the sociology of dating apps. That mix of book smarts and real-world bruises? That’s what I bring to the table. That’s what makes the work real. It’s why I can talk to a couple in Ashgrove about their dead bedroom one hour, and the next, help a kid in Taigum figure out why he feels like a fraud on Tinder. I’ve been there. Growing up was a weird mix of Californian sunshine and a pretty intense curiosity about... well, everything I wasn’t supposed to talk about. My folks were loving but conservative. So I learned early that the big questions—about desire, about identity, about why we pick the partners we do—didn’t have easy answers. I’d sneak peeks at my dad’s discarded psych textbooks, fascinated by chapters on human behaviour. My teenage years in Fullerton were a crash course in the gap between what people said they felt and what their eyes betrayed. That fascination followed me. I studied psychology at uni, then specialised in human sexuality. It felt like unlocking a secret language everyone was afraid to speak. My past work was... varied, to say the least. I spent time as a research assistant on a longitudinal study about relationship satisfaction at the University of Queensland, over in St Lucia. Fascinating data, but it lives in a sterile bubble. So I also volunteered with a community health organisation in Fortitude Valley, doing on-the-ground sexual health and relationship workshops. That’s where you learn the real stuff. The fear, the hope, the sheer mess of it all. Now, my activity is a bit more focused. I write. I dig deep into how we navigate love and money, especially in this digital age. Currently, I’m channelling a lot of that into articles for the CamoWallet project over at camowallet.app. It’s about the intersection of finance and dating—how we present ourselves, the power dynamics, the hidden anxieties. And yeah, I often find myself using Bracken Ridge as my lens. It’s the perfect, unassuming backdrop to explore these big, universal themes. Life in Bracken Ridge is my anchor. I live on a quiet street off Bracken Street, not far from the Taigum Square shopping centre. I do my morning runs along the Cabbage Tree Creek bike path, watching the waterbirds do their thing. It’s grounding. I’ll grab a coffee at the little cafe near the library on Barrett Street, or sometimes head to the Bracken Ridge Tavern for a counter meal and to watch the footy. It’s a suburb of real people—tradies, nurses, young families just starting out. It’s not flashy, and that’s the point. It keeps me honest. When I’m writing about the transactional nature of modern dating, I can look out my window and see the bloke next door washing his ute, and it reminds me that real connection is the opposite of that. It’s here, in the unglamorous, solid reality of Bracken Ridge, that I feel most equipped to untangle the chaos of the human heart. I was born on the 8th of July, 1987, at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton. The late 80s in Orange County. Think hair metal on the radio, pastel-coloured everything, and a kind of sun-bleached optimism that felt a little like it was hiding something. My dad was a mid-level manager for a defence contractor, my mom a part-time legal secretary. Our house was a standard three-bedroom tract home on a street with no shade, where the biggest thrill was the ice cream truck jingling its way through the cul-de-sac. Even then, I was a watcher. I’d sit on the driveway, the blacktop so hot it could melt the rubber off your sneakers, and just... observe. The way the neighbour’s marriage seemed to fray during a heatwave, the secret language of teenagers smoking behind the 7-Eleven. Fullerton gave me my first data set. It was a world of clean lawns and dirty secrets. Perfect training for a future sexologist, honestly. You learn to look for the cracks in the facade, the things people don't say but their bodies do.
