Austin Lord: Cochrane, Sex, and the Space Between I’m Austin. I was born here in Cochrane, left for a while, and came back. It’s one of those towns that gets in your blood, I guess—the Bow River, the Rockies on the horizon, the whole bit. I’ve spent the last fifteen years studying human sexuality, the messy economics of dating, and why we swipe right on people we’d never talk to at a party. These days, I write about my hometown for the CamoWallet project. It’s a strange loop, coming home to write about home. April 17th, 1990. Cochrane, Alberta. My mom still talks about the snow that year—it was late, even for us. The kind of wet, heavy spring snow that snaps poplar branches and makes the power lines hum. I came into the world at the old Cochrane Hospital on Bow Valley Trail, a building that’s not even a hospital anymore. My dad, a welder who worked the rigs up near Grand Prairie when he could get the work, paced the linoleum floors in the waiting room, chain-smoking Export 'A' greens out by the ambulance bay. They tell me the Bow was running high that week, chocolate milk from the mountain melt. I think growing up with that sound—the river always there, always moving—it sets a baseline for you. A kind of restlessness, maybe. Or permanence. Hard to say. Living in Cochrane isn't like living in a postcard, though the postcards aren't wrong. My day starts with a run along the Bow River pathway system, usually from the boat launch near the old bridge all the way out towards the Bow River Campground. I’ll pass fly fishermen in the summer, kids throwing rocks, the whole scene. I grab coffee at a little place on Main Street—not the big chain, the one tucked in beside the old hardware store—and I watch the town wake up. You see everyone here. Ranchers in for supplies, young families, the mountain bikers heading west. It’s a real place. It’s my place. Growing up here... God, we were bored. The kind of bored that forges character, or at least forged mine. We’d spend summers at Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park before it was even a park, just trespassing on the old ranch land, daring each other to jump into the freezing quarry ponds. I remember keg parties out near the Ghost Dam, the water this eerie, flat grey at midnight. It was at one of those parties, maybe when I was sixteen, that I first really understood the gap between what people said about sex and what they did. This girl, Sarah, she was railroading me for dating her friend, all moral outrage. Twenty minutes later, I saw her behind the truck with a guy from Bow Valley High, the one who played tight end. It wasn't shocking. It was... instructive. That gap. It became my life's work. Look, I’m not saying I have all the answers. God, no. I’ve had my heart absolutely caved in. I’ve been the guy who stayed too long and the guy who left too fast. I spent my twenties in a kind of controlled chaos—living in a basement suite in Calgary's Beltline while I did my undergrad at Mount Royal University, then my Master's, studying the anthropology of sex. I worked at the Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre for a while, doing intake and crisis counselling. You want to see the unvarnished truth of human connection and disconnection? Spend a Friday night there. You learn that money, insecurity, desire—they’re all tangled up in the same knot. I’ve had relationships that were transactional before I even knew what that word really meant. It took a long time, and a lot of mistakes, to learn that vulnerability isn't a weakness in the game of attraction; it's the whole damn ballgame. My past work? It was all fieldwork. The bars on 17th Avenue, the dating app meetups that fizzled before the first drink arrived, the long-term relationships that burned hot and then just... stopped. I studied it, yeah, but I lived it. That’s the only way to really get it. Now, my work is different. Now, I write. Specifically, for the CamoWallet project on camowallet.app. I write about Cochrane. The history of the old coal mines, the best place to watch a sunset (it's by the Big Hill, always has been), the politics of the new rec centre. It’s a way of documenting a place I love, a place that’s changing fast. It feels solid. Grounding. After years of studying the fluid, chaotic nature of relationships, it’s good to write about something as real as the limestone in the Rockies. It’s all connected, somehow. The permanence of the geography, and the constant, shifting current of the people on it.
