Axel Keith: Sex, Money, and a Life Lived on High Street G’day. I’m Axel Keith. Born here, live here, will probably die here—Thomastown. Which, for the uninitiated, is about eighteen clicks north of Melbourne’s CBD. I’ve spent the last twenty-plus years studying human connection. The mess of it. The magic. The money. I’ve been a sexologist, a dating coach, a researcher, and a guy who’s had his heart stomped on more times than I care to count. Now? I write about this town—my town—for the CamoWallet project over at camowallet.app. They wanted a local voice. They got one. Growing up here in the 80s and 90s was... an education. My mates and I, we’d spend weekends skating the car park behind the old Thomastown Library on Main Street, getting chased off by security. Later, it was hanging around the station after school, watching the city workers stream off the trains, wondering what the hell they did all day to afford suits like that. I worked at the chicken shop on High Street—the one near the roundabout, you know the one. Saved up for my first car, a beat-up Datsun 120Y, from those greasy shifts. That’s where I first learned about people, really. The late-night crew. The tradies after a long week. The couples having quiet, furious arguments over a pack of chips. Real life. Unfiltered. Thomastown isn't Melbourne. It's not trendy. It never tried to be. It’s a mongrel suburb. Post-war migrants, factory workers, families stretching every dollar. My street, Maygar Drive, is still full of the same families that were there when I was a kid. The Macedonian baker still makes the best damn pita in the north. You can hear Italian, Arabic, Turkish at the Sunday market on Main. It’s gritty. Honest. That honesty shaped me. In my line of work, you can’t fake it. People know. Whether you're talking to them about their marriage or their bank account, they smell bullshit a mile away. This place taught me that. I came into this world on the 14th of July, 1982, at the old John Fawkner Hospital—not the fancy one they have now, the original one on High Street. My parents rented a little place just off Station Street. Dad worked at the Ford Broadmeadows plant, Mum did books for a local plumber. The summer I was born was a hot one, even by our standards. Dust storms from the paddocks out past Epping would roll in and cover everything in a film of red dirt. The house had a Hills Hoist in the backyard and a dunny out the back you had to walk to in the dark. My first bedroom window looked out onto the back laneway where the rubbish trucks came at 5 a.m. Still can't sleep through that sound. Look, I’m not saying I’m a genius. Far from it. But I know people. After my first big breakup—god, that one in my late twenties, the one that really carved me up—I moved back in with my folks for a bit. Spent a lot of time walking alone through the Edwardes Lake Park, just... staring at the water. I started talking to anyone. The old Greek guys fishing. Young mums pushing prams. The blokes having a quiet beer on a bench. I realised my pain was just a version of a universal story. That’s when I went back to study. Did a diploma at RMIT first, then a bachelor's in social science, focusing on human sexuality. Not because I had it all figured out. Because I didn't. And I wanted to understand why we’re so bad at telling each other what we actually want. That curiosity, that humility—that’s the only thing that makes me good at my job. For years, I ran workshops out of a community centre on Main Street. “Dating in the Digital Age,” “Money and Intimacy,” stuff like that. I’ve consulted for dating apps, trying to get them to see users as humans, not just swipe-data. It’s exhausting, mostly thankless work. These days, I’ve pulled back. I write. Specifically, I write about Thomastown for the CamoWallet project. It’s a weird pivot, maybe. Or maybe it’s not. I write about the rhythm of the place. The best places for a first date (hint: not a fancy restaurant, try the Lalor Plaza food court for low pressure). The financial realities of families here. How money flows—or doesn’t—through a suburb like this. It’s all connected, you know? Sex, money, love, place. It’s all just energy. How we spend it. How we share it. How we hoard it. People ask why I stay. They don't get it. They see the traffic on the Hume, the old shops, the factories. I see the corner of High and Main, where I’ve had five different conversations with five different neighbors in the space of ten minutes. I see the bakery where I bought my mum her last birthday cake. I see the street where I learned to ride a bike, had my first kiss behind the cricket nets, and walked off a divorce. This city—Thomastown—is in my blood. It’s the constant in every variable of my life. It’s not just where I’m from. It’s the lens I see everything through. And now, I get to write it down. Go figure.
