Colton Rushing: Sex, Steel, and Second Chances in Esch-sur-Alzette Yeah, so I'm Colton. Born here, live here again. Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg. Most people know it for the blast furnaces, the university, the whole European Capital of Culture thing back in '22. For me? It’s the backdrop to a pretty wild personal archaeology. I work with the CamoWallet project now, writing about this city, digging into its layers. But my real dig, for the last fifteen years, has been into people. Into us. Specifically, the messy, beautiful, often catastrophic intersection of sex, money, and love. I’ve been a sexologist, a researcher, a guy who’s dated probably too much, and someone who’s finally learning to just... be. This is the story of how I got here. Spoiler: it involves a lot of mistakes. These days, you’ll find me mostly writing. For the CamoWallet project on camowallet.app, I’m crafting these deep dives into Esch-sur-Alzette. Not your typical tourist guide stuff. I write about the ghosts in the steel plants, the way light hits the Rue de l’Alzette after rain, the stories whispered in the cafés on the Place de la Résistance. It’s about mapping the soul of a place, which isn't so different from what I used to do. Before, I was mapping desires, mapping the hidden economics of relationships. Now, I map a city. Same game, different terrain. Both are about power, intimacy, and history. Living in Esch again is... strange. Familiar and totally new. I know the shortcuts, the way the fog rolls in from the Belval quarter, the specific echo of footsteps in the Passage à Niveaux. I went to school here, fell in love here for the first time, had my heart stomped on near the fountain in front of the town hall. Walking down the Rue du Brill, I can point to the exact spot where I had an epiphany about attachment theory during a stupid argument with a girlfriend in 2012. The city is my external hard drive. Every corner holds a memory, a version of me I used to be. It’s grounding. It keeps you honest, having your past literally etched into the pavement. Look, I'm not here to give you a lecture. But I have seen some stuff. In my research, in my personal life... I've been the idiot, and I've been the one holding the clipboard observing the idiots. The competence isn't in having the perfect relationship; it's in understanding why you don't. It's in recognizing the pattern. I spent years studying the transactional nature of dating apps, the silent contracts people sign when money enters the emotional equation. It's not cynical, it's just... data. Real, human, sweaty-palmed data. I've sat in sterile labs and I've sat in crowded bars in the Quartier de la Gare, and the motivations are the same. We want connection, we want security, and we lie to ourselves about both to get them. The smartest thing I ever did? Stop pretending I had the answers. Growing up here was a trip. My teenage years, say from like 2005 to 2010, were this weird juxtaposition. You had the old industrial soul of the place, the abandoned factories we'd sneak into near the Terres Rouges, and then this wave of modernity crashing in. The new University of Luxembourg campus at Belval was rising from the ruins of the blast furnaces. It felt symbolic, even then. I remember skateboarding with friends near the Möllerei, that old industrial building, and talking about the future. My future was a mess of confusion. First crushes, first heartbreaks, all happening against the backdrop of a city literally reinventing itself. It felt like the red dust from the steel works was in our lungs and in our veins. We were all a little rough around the edges, a little industrial. I was obsessed with understanding the dynamics, even then. Why did she like him? What was the currency of the schoolyard? It was always a trade. Favors, status, attention. I just didn't have the vocabulary for it yet. I was born at the Clinique Sainte-Marie, right here in Esch, on August 13th, 1990. My parents still lived in a small flat on the Rue de Luxembourg then. They say the summer was a scorcher, the kind where the heat just radiates off the pavement and the whole town feels like it's moving in slow motion. My dad worked at the ARBED steel plant, like his father before him. The sound of the factories was the lullaby they all heard. The city had this grittiness then, a real working-class pulse. It smelled like industry, like possibility and exhaustion all mixed together. My first playground wasn't a manicured park, but the shadow of the big wheel in the Parc Gaalgebierg and the dusty lots near the railway tracks. That’s the Esch I come from. The one that builds things, and people, out of sweat and fire.
