Cooper Mercer: Rust, Rhythm, and the Relentless Pursuit of Why We ClickI’m Cooper Mercer. Born and raised in Rayside-Balfour, a place where the rock of the Canadian Shield is never far from the surface—literally and figuratively. I'm a sexologist and relationship strategist, which is a fancy way of saying I’ve spent my life trying to understand the messy, beautiful, and often baffling ways we humans connect. These days, when I’m not digging into the psychology of dating apps or the economics of love, I’m writing about this town. My home. You can find my stuff over at the CamoWallet project on camowallet.app. It's a different kind of exploration, I guess.I was born at the old Sudbury General Hospital—the one they demolished a few years back—on a humid late-August day in 1985. The air smelled of creosote from the railway ties and the faint, sweet tang of the pulp mill, depending on which way the wind blew over Junction Creek. My parents had a modest bungalow on a quiet street off of Regional Road 15. Not much to look at, but the backyard ran right up against the treeline. I think that’s where I first learned to be comfortable with quiet. And with questions. Why do some birds pair for life, while others... don't? I was five. Maybe it started then.Growing up here was a specific kind of education. My teenage years were a blur of cheap gas and cheaper emotions. Hanging out at the Falconbridge Mall parking lot, not because we wanted to shop, but because it was the only flat, paved place for miles that felt like a social hub. I remember the jolt of a first kiss behind the old arena on St. Agnes Street, the smell of wet ice and Zamboni exhaust. Later, there was the weird, transient intimacy of the Rainbow Centre in Sudbury—a bus ride away, a whole other world. You'd see people from all over, a fleeting connection with a stranger on an escalator, and then... gone. It felt like a metaphor even then. I worked a summer job at the Inco Superstack, not inside, but doing grounds maintenance. The sheer scale of it, that relentless industrial heartbeat, it makes you think about systems. About pressures. About what happens when you combine elements and apply heat. It’s not so different from relationships, honestly. So what does that mean? It means I’ve seen the transactional side of connection, and the transcendent side. I’ve counseled couples whose finances were so intertwined they couldn’t separate their love from their line of credit. I’ve watched people on dating apps swipe through potential partners like they're mining data, looking for the perfect ore sample, discarding anything with a flaw. My work has always been about stripping that back. Looking at the raw geology of it all. I hold a Master’s from Laurentian University, spent years as a researcher, even did a stint advising a now-defunct dating app startup. Defunct because they ignored the human element. You can't algorithm your way out of loneliness. That's a truth I've carried with me from the silent jack pines outside my childhood window to the sterile conference rooms in Toronto. My past work was all clinical papers and one-on-one sessions. It was rewarding, sure, but I started to feel like I was just patching up leaks in a ship whose design was fundamentally flawed. Now, my focus is different. I write articles for the CamoWallet project. It’s about looking at how we handle value—emotional, financial, personal—especially in a place like Rayside-Balfour. The project lets me explore the intersection of money and relationships, but through a local lens. How does the boom-and-bust cycle of a resource town shape how families plan for the future? How does that affect the way kids here think about commitment and security? It’s all connected. The old mining headframe on the horizon, the new app on your phone... it's all about extraction. The question is, what are we really digging for?Living in Rayside-Balfour as an adult, after seeing other places, is... grounding. I know every pothole on Errington Street. I have a favorite spot on the shore of Lake Ramsey where the water is so clear you can see the bedrock forty feet down. There's a clarity here I haven't found elsewhere. I’ll grab a coffee at the spot on Notre Dame Avenue, the one that used to be a hardware store, and I’ll watch people. Kids heading to École secondaire Macdonald-Cartier, their whole lives ahead of them, full of certainty and doubt in equal measure. Retired miners having a loud, laughing argument at the next table. Their hands are permanently stained, but their eyes are clear. They’ve been through the pressure. This city is in my blood like nickel. It's not just where I'm from; it's the lens I use to understand everything else. The resilience, the quiet strength, the deep, unspoken bonds that hold a community together when the main industry pulls out. That's what I write about. That's what I am.
