Elias Stoll: Sex, Money, and the Long Way Home G’day. I’m Elias. Born and raised in Woodridge, that patch of Queensland the highway doesn't bother slowing down for. I’m a writer for the CamoWallet project now, which means I spend my days thinking about money and relationships — and how they tangle us up. Before that? I was a sexologist. Before that? A lot of things. A lot of mistakes. A lot of learning. January 17th, 1980. The Women's Hospital, not far from the M1. They say it was a humid one, even by Woodridge standards — the kind of wet heat that sits on your chest. My parents had a little fibro place on Wembley Road, back when that stretch was more vacant lots than car yards. Dad drove trucks. Mum worked the registers at the old Rocklea markets. I came home to a house that smelled of dust and eucalyptus, with the constant, low hum of traffic heading somewhere else. Even then, this place felt like a starting line. Honestly? I’m not sure I’m that different from anyone else. I’ve just spent a lot of time in the uncomfortable spaces. The ones where people talk about what they actually want. In my twenties, I did a stint at the University of Queensland, studying social sciences. Then I dove into the deep end — became a researcher, a counsellor. Worked with couples at a small clinic on Kingston Road. Saw the raw data of human connection. The love, the lies, the spreadsheets some people kept on their partners. It’s messy. I was messy. My own marriage? Let’s just say it didn't survive my 'research phase'. I became an expert in intimacy, and pretty useless at practicing it. That’s the joke, right? But Woodridge... it’s in my blood. The grid of it. You can’t grow up here without understanding something about transience. About people passing through. I’ve walked from Trinder Park station to my place on Ewing Road a thousand times. I know the smell of the bakeries on the main drag, the sound of the Logan River after a storm. I’ve sat in the library on Civic Square, researching sexual behaviors in the digital age, while outside, the whole world walks by — every culture, every story. It’s not a pretty postcard suburb. It’s a real one. And that reality taught me more about relationships than any textbook ever could. You see the transactional side of life here, the economic pressures, the way money — or the lack of it — bleeds into everything. That’s what I write about now for CamoWallet. It’s not just about crypto or finance. It’s about the intersection. How we fund our desires. How dating apps have turned attraction into a swipe-based economy. How the safety we seek in a partner often mirrors the security we crave in a bank account. I use what I learned in sexology, the years of listening, and I apply it to this new digital landscape. I sit in my little home office, looking out at the familiar streets, and I try to untangle it for people. The emotional economy. The price of connection. It’s just another layer on this place I’ve never really left. Growing up here in the 90s was... educational. I was a scrawny kid with too many questions. I remember hanging out at the old Woodridge State High, watching the older guys flex for girls. It was a theatre. Pure performance. I worked at a fish and chip shop on Compton Road for a while. Saw the Friday night rituals. The desperate hope. The fights. I learned early that what people say they want and what they actually do are two different things. I wasn't a jock, wasn't a brain. I was just... watching. Cataloging. It probably made me a half-decent researcher later. Or maybe just a cynic with good notes.
