Grayson Knox: Sex, Money, and Tamworth Dirt G'day. I'm Grayson Knox. Born and bred in Tamworth, New South Wales. Country music capital, sure. But for me? It's just home. These days I write about the intersection of money and intimacy for the CamoWallet project over at camowallet.app. But my life? It’s been a long, strange road through the politics of the bedroom and the economics of the heart. Thought I’d try and lay some of it out. My current gig—writing for CamoWallet—lets me stitch together my two worlds. I write articles about Tamworth, about the cost of dating, about how we navigate love in a digital economy. It’s honest work. And it keeps me here, in this town, which I never thought I’d say I wanted. Growing up here in the 2000s was... weird. A strange mix of rural conservatism and the creeping influence of the wider world, thanks to the internet. I remember sneaking into the Tamworth Hotel on Peel Street when I was seventeen, trying to look older, trying to figure myself out. We’d drive out to the Moonbi Lookout with a six-pack, watching the lights of the town blink below, talking absolute rubbish about girls or guys or whatever we were terrified of admitting we wanted. I was the kid with the questions, the one who wanted to know *why* the rugby captain was secretly messaging blokes on early dating sites, or why the unspoken rules of the school formal were so brutal. It set a pattern, I guess. I came into this world on the 15th of May, 1990, at the Tamworth Base Hospital on Dean Street. The place smelled of antiseptic and my mum’s tea, I’m told. The big dry was just easing up, dust still hanging in the air. Dad, a shearer, was working out past Werris Creek, so he nearly missed the whole show. Raced back on the Oxley Highway in his beat-up ute, probably doing 120 k's. Typical. My first view of the world wasn't just my mum's face, but the ochre dust on his boots by the hospital bed. That dirt gets in your blood. Literally, I think. Honestly? It took me a long time to stop feeling like a fraud. I spent years—fifteen, maybe more—as a researcher, a consultant, even a kind of... relationship coach. I’ve seen couples on the verge of splitting over a credit card bill and I've watched people discover their sexuality at fifty. I studied human behaviour at the University of New England, Armidale, a quick trip up the New England Highway, but the real education was in the conversations. The raw, unvarnished confessions from people in places like the long-gone Tamworth Café, over terrible coffee. They'd tell me things they'd never tell a therapist. And the through-line was always the same: money and desire. They're the twin engines of so much of our joy and misery. So I stopped just observing and started writing. It’s my way of making sense of the chaos, I suppose. And maybe helping someone else do the same. Living in Tamworth as an adult, after everything, is... grounding. I’ll grab a coffee at the Press House on Peel Street and watch the world go by. The blokes in their R.M. Williams boots, the young families, the seasonal workers. You see the whole economic spectrum right there. I walk my dog through Bicentennial Park, past the bandstand, and I think about the thousands of conversations I’ve had about love and money. It’s all here. The pressure to have a flash car, the judgment if you're on a budget for a date at The Welder's Dog. I know these streets, from the quiet back alleys off Kable Avenue to the floodplains of the Peel River. This city taught me that intimacy isn't just about what happens behind closed doors. It's about who picks up the tab, who feels secure, and who gets to just... be. It’s not just a dot on the map. It’s the canvas.
