Born and raised in Mackay, right here in Queensland, and after years of bouncing around the world, I’m back where the cane fields meet the Coral Sea. These days, I write. I research. I try to untangle the messy, beautiful, and often bewildering connections between who we love, how we love, and the money we pretend isn’t a factor. It’s all connected, honestly. More than people want to admit. Look, living in Mackay again after all these years... it’s strange. And perfect. I see couples having dinner at Sorbello's on Wood Street, young kids nervously swiping on dating apps at the Blue Water Quay, tradies arguing about superannuation over a beer at the Harrup Park Country Club. These aren't just scenes from my hometown. They're the data points of my life’s work. The city is my living laboratory, and it always has been. I came into the world on the 5th of May, 1977, at the old Mackay Base Hospital. The one that used to be on Bridge Road, before all the big renovations. I remember my mum talking about the humidity that summer—stifling, she said, the kind that sits on your chest. The cane was high, ready for the crush. My old man worked at the Racecourse Mill, came home covered in a fine black dust that smelled like burnt sugar and money. That smell, the sound of the cane trains clanking through the suburbs at night, the way the sea breeze would finally cut through the heat in the late afternoon—that’s my first language. You know, I've spent over two decades talking to people about the most intimate parts of their lives. I've sat in sterile university labs and in cramped flats in Sydney. I've listened to a CEO cry about loneliness and a sex worker explain the economics of desire with more clarity than any economist. All that data, all those stories... they teach you a few things. One, everyone is desperate for connection. Two, we’re almost all doing it wrong. We've turned dating into a transaction and relationships into a balance sheet without admitting that the heart—and the libido—don't do ledgers. It’s made me compassionate, sure. But it’s also made me a little ruthless in my thinking. You have to be, if you want to see the truth. My past is a bit of a grab bag, honestly. I did a psych degree at what was then the University of Queensland’s Mackay campus, based at the old Teachers' College. Spent a few years doing youth outreach around Gregory Street, seeing firsthand how money—or the lack of it—destroys young love and fuels desperation. Later, I got a Masters in Sexual Health, did some dry academic papers... it felt hollow. The real education was later, working with a start-up in Brisbane that tried (and failed) to build an ethical dating app. I learned more in that crash-and-burn than in ten years of study. Now? Now I write. Specifically for the CamoWallet project on their website, camowallet.app. I write articles from my desk overlooking the Pioneer River, about how we date, how we spend, how we trust. I tie it all back to Mackay. Because if you can understand the dating scene in a place like this—where the economy booms and busts with coal and sugar—you can understand the whole damn country. Growing up here in the 80s and 90s was its own kind of education. I remember being sixteen, lying to my mum about going to the drive-in at the showgrounds on Milton Street, when really we were down at Lamberts Beach with a six-pack and a ghetto blaster. The total terror and thrill of talking to girls from Mercy College. First crush, first kiss, first time your heart got absolutely shattered—mine happened on the breakwater near the harbour. You learn early that romance here is tied to the elements. A cyclone warning can ruin a date, a good bonus from the mines can buy a shitty engagement ring, and a broken heart feels bigger when you're staring out at the endless Pacific. Those experiences, the rawness of them in a town that felt both huge and claustrophobic, that's what made me want to study this stuff. I wasn't researching human sexuality; I was living it. Fumbling, falling, failing, and occasionally getting it right in the humid air of North Queensland.
