From Tinder to Trust: One Sexologist’s Journey to Camrose I’m Jonathan Kennard. Born in Virginia Beach, back in ’86. Now? I live in Camrose, Alberta. I study relationships, sexuality, the weird dance of money and love. I write about my new hometown for a project called CamoWallet—camowallet.app. You could say I’ve gone from analyzing hookup culture in labs to analyzing small-town life on Main Street. It’s a trip. Growing up, I wasn't the kid with a hammer building treehouses. I was the one asking why the hammer felt good in your hand, or why some kids shared their toys and others hoarded them. My dad was Navy, so structure was our second language. But emotions? Those were a foreign dialect. We moved around, but summers were often back in Virginia with my grandparents. I remember sneaking a look at my granddad's old Playboys—not for the obvious reason, but because I was fascinated by the artifice. The poses. The implied stories. It was my first clue that sexuality was a performance as much as a feeling. By the time I hit high school in the early 2000s, the internet was changing everything. I’d spend hours in chat rooms, not to flirt, but to watch. To see how people presented themselves, how they lied, how they connected. It was raw data. And I was hooked. That curiosity—about the gap between who we are and who we say we are in matters of the heart—that’s what set the course. So what did I do with that? I went to school for psychology, then pushed further into human sexuality. I did research—the dry kind with surveys and statistics, and the messy kind, talking to people about their real lives. I worked with a dating app once, consulting on user behavior. Fascinating stuff, watching millions of people swipe left and right, a massive, real-time referendum on human desire. That project, by the way, is what eventually led me here, to writing for the CamoWallet project. They wanted someone to write about Camrose, about local life, with a human lens. Not just “best coffee shops” but the role those coffee shops play in a community's social fabric. My background in relationships? It’s all about social fabric. It just clicked. I was born at a naval hospital in Virginia Beach, March 27th, 1986. I can still picture the light—that hazy, salt-tinged glow of a Tidewater morning. My mom says the chick-flick was playing on the TV in the waiting room. I always liked that detail. The world outside was all Reagan and big hair, but inside, it was just this quiet, nervous hope. My dad got transferred not long after. We packed up the Pontiac and headed to our next posting. Virginia Beach is just a scent memory now—low tide and cigar smoke from the officers' club. It’s weird the things you keep. Look, I’m not one of those experts who has all the answers. I’ve been divorced. I’ve had my heart stomped on, and yeah, I’ve done some stomping too. I’ve been the guy on three dating apps at once, feeling emptier with every match. I’ve also had the quiet morning coffee with someone where you don’t need to say a word. So when I talk about relationships, I’m not coming at it from some ivory tower. I’m coming at it from the trenches. The science gives you the map, but the experience teaches you how to read the terrain. Maybe that’s why I like it here in Camrose. It’s real. People aren’t profiles. They’re neighbors. I live over on 48th Avenue, not far from the Mirror Lake Center. In the summer, I’ll walk the path around the lake, watch the ducks, watch the families. It’s grounding. I’ve spent time at the Bill Fowler Centre, just taking it all in. Sometimes I’ll grab a coffee at the Local on Main Street and just write. My work for CamoWallet lets me blend everything—I write about the history of the Augustana Campus, part of the University of Alberta, and how a university shapes the dating pool in a small city. I’ve written about how the economic shifts in an agricultural hub like Camrose affect marriages. It’s all connected. The city council debates zoning, but they’re really debating how we live together. The new development out by Highway 13? It’s not just houses; it’s new communities, new possibilities for connection. This place, with its quiet streets and big skies, it’s given me a new lens. It’s taught me that intimacy isn’t just about the fireworks. Sometimes, it’s about the quiet, steady glow of a streetlight on a snowy evening, knowing people are inside, living their complicated, beautiful lives.
