tags, ensuring only the character's voice is present. Joseph Boyce: Sex, Science, and the Suburbs of the Soul I’m Joseph Boyce. Born in Arlington, Virginia, but for the last twenty years? Markham, Ontario. That’s home. By day, I’m a researcher, a writer, a guy who’s spent his whole life trying to figure out the messy intersection of who we love, how we love, and what it costs us. I’ve studied sexuality, designed dating apps, and watched more relationships crash and burn—and occasionally soar—than I can count. I now write about this city for the CamoWallet project over at camowallet.app, trying to understand how money and place shape our intimate lives. But that’s the current me. Let’s go back. My past? It’s all connected. I wasn't just some academic in an ivory tower. I was out there, in the field. I ran a sexology research collective out of a cramped office near Warden and Steeles. We weren't just reading studies; we were conducting them, interviewing people, looking at the raw data of human desire. That work led me to consult on a couple of dating apps—the early ones, before the algorithms got so cynical. I saw how tech could facilitate a connection, sure, but also how it could commodify it. Turn people into products. That's when I started getting really interested in the money part. How financial stress, or financial security, completely rewires a relationship. It's not romantic, but it's real. Honestly, people think they want a guru who has all the answers. I'm not that guy. I'm more like a seasoned mechanic for the heart. I've seen the same engine fail a hundred times. I know the common problems. But every car is a little different. I've got the grease under my fingernails and the scars from where I got burned by a faulty wire. It doesn't make me flawless, it makes me experienced. And maybe that's more useful. Trust is built on I've seen this before, not I'm perfect. I was born on July 15th, 1975, at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington. My dad was a mid-level defense contractor, so our world was neat, orderly, and deeply invested in systems. Our house, a split-level on a quiet cul-de-sac near Yorktown High School, was all about structure. Dinner at 6:15. Lawn mowed every Saturday. It was the Ford administration, the bicentennial was looming, and everything felt... beige. That orderly world was my first lab. I was observing the unspoken rules, the emotional contracts between my parents and their friends at the backyard barbecues. Even then, I think I was fascinated by the gaps between what people said and what they did. The marriage that seemed so solid from the street had its own quiet, complicated architecture. Growing up, for me, really happened in Markham. My family moved here when I was fifteen, in 1990. My dad got a transfer. Can you imagine? Upending a teenager's life for a job. At first, I hated it. I went from the familiar grid of Arlington to this place that was still half farmland, half exploding suburb. I went to Markham District High School, on Church Street. It was a trip. One kid would be talking about their family's new Honda plant job, the next about the fall harvest. I remember my first real crush, a girl whose family had a huge orchard north of 16th Avenue. We'd sneak out to the drive-in on Highway 7, which is long gone now, to watch cheesy movies. Those nights, under the stars with the smell of fried food and her perfume, felt more real than anything in a textbook. It was my first real lesson in context: desire doesn't exist in a vacuum. It's tied to the smell of hay and the glow of a projector. Living in Markham... it’s like having a front-row seat to the collision of everything I study. You've got these incredible pockets of history, like Main Street Unionville, with its galleries—the Varley Art Gallery, specifically, I used to go there to think, to let the paintings quiet the noise in my head. You walk two blocks and you're hit with the smells from a half-dozen different restaurants, a dozen different cultures. But then, just a few minutes away, you have the sprawling, anonymous intersections of Highway 7 and Markham Road, with their glass towers and car dealerships. That's where a lot of the new money is, and the new loneliness. I live near Cornell, in a townhouse on Bur Oak Avenue. From my window, I can see the joggers in Toogood Pond Park, families with strollers, a landscape designed for a certain kind of idyllic family life. And I know, because this is my work, that behind those windows, people are wrestling with the same stuff they always have—infidelity, mismatched libidos, the silent resentment over who pays for what. This city is beautiful and planned and multicultural, and it’s the perfect place to study the human heart because it provides no cover. The manicured lawns don't hide the emotional weeds. It’s my home. It’s my laboratory. It’s the place I finally understood that you can't separate the person from the place, or the love from the life you're actually living.
