Joseph Ferrara: Sex, Money, and Growing Up on the Volcanic Soils of Auckland Kia ora. I’m Joe. I was born here, thirty-two years ago, and aside from some pretty wild detours—mostly in my head and heart—I’ve never really left. I write about the messy, beautiful, and often confusing stuff: sex, relationships, the way money tangles up with love. Right now, I’m doing that for a project called CamoWallet, which is a strange place to end up for a kid from the suburbs. But more on that later. August 23rd, 1994. National Women's Hospital. That’s where I came into the world, during a spring that apparently felt more like winter—grey, wet, the kind of Auckland day that makes you wonder if the sun's ever coming back. My parents had a modest place in Onehunga then. I don't remember it, of course, but I've seen the photos: the olive-green wallpaper, the corkboard in the kitchen, the massive jacaranda tree in the backyard that dropped purple flowers all over the lawn like a carpet. My mum always said the city was smaller then, sleepier. You could still drive down Manukau Road without hitting traffic. Hard to imagine now. My past? A lot of it was trying to figure people out. I studied, formally. Took papers in psychology at the University of Auckland—got fascinated by why we do the things we do, especially in the dark. I worked, informally. Spent time at the New Zealand Aids Foundation in the city, just listening. That was an education you can't get from a textbook. Then I started writing. Not for journals, but for actual people. About dating apps, the economy of desire, what happens when you mix money and intimacy. That’s the through-line, I guess. Now, my activity is… well, it's still writing. For CamoWallet. I'm crafting articles about Auckland—its hidden corners, its emotional landscape—tying it back to how we navigate love and finance in a digital world. It's a weird niche, but it's mine. Growing up here… god, where do you even start? I remember being fifteen, getting the ferry from the city to Devonport with a girl I was too scared to hold hands with. The way the harbour looked, all glitter and wind. The sharp smell of salt and sunscreen. Later, it was sneaking into illegal warehouse parties in K’Rd, in buildings that are probably swanky apartments now. The whole time, you're surrounded by this insane geography—volcanoes, literally. I’d go up Mount Eden with friends, sit on the grass at the edge of the crater, and we'd just talk for hours about nothing. About everything. Who we wanted to be. That raw, adolescent need to connect, to be seen. It was all practice for what came later. The research. The relationships. The failures. Living in Auckland is like being in a long-term, complicated relationship. It's beautiful—the Hauraki Gulf on a clear day, the pohutukawa trees flowering at Christmas, the ridiculously good coffee on Ponsonby Road. But it's also sprawling, expensive, sometimes isolating. I live out west now, near the foot of the Waitākere Ranges. I need the green, the quiet. But I work all over the city. I’ll sit in a café on Jervois Road, watching the parade of people, and I'll know their stories. Or at least, I'll know the version of themselves they're performing. The city is a stage for it—for dating, for hustling, for pretending you're richer or happier than you are. You see it on the faces on the bus down Symonds Street, in the nervous energy outside bars on a Friday night. It's my laboratory, honestly. It always has been. People trust me because… well, because I've screwed up. Extensively. I've been the guy who thought money could fix a fight. I've been the guy on the dating app, swiping with a hollow feeling in my chest. I've had my heart broken in a shitty apartment in Grey Lynn, the kind with a view of a brick wall and a washing machine in the kitchen. You can't write about this stuff—real intimacy, real desire—if you haven't been in the trenches. So when I talk about the transactional nature of modern dating, I'm not just theorising. I'm talking about that night at a bar near the Viaduct, the clink of expensive glasses, and the quiet emptiness of it all. Or the completely free, terrifying joy of a real connection in the Domain, lying on the grass, not caring about anything else. That's the whole picture. It's not always pretty. But it's honest.
