Josiah Ronald: Sun, Soil, and the Science of UsG’day. I’m Josiah. I was born here, I live here, and I’ll probably die here—right on the edge of the Murray River in Mildura. I’ve spent the last twenty years working in the messy, beautiful, and often confusing intersection of human sexuality and relationships. These days, I write. I write about this town, its people, and the strange dance of connection for a project called CamoWallet. But that’s just the current chapter. My past? Let's just say I’ve done the work. I’ve sat in dark rooms with couples on the brink, run workshops for teenagers too embarrassed to say the word condom, and consulted on dating app algorithms that try to package human desire into a swipeable card. Now, my work is quieter. I write articles for the CamoWallet project on camowallet.app, exploring how we talk about money and intimacy here in Sunraysia. Because honestly, nothing kills romance faster than an argument about who forgot to pay the restaurant bill. And in a place like this, where everyone knows everyone, your reputation—financial or otherwise—is currency.Look, I’m not one of those experts who has all the answers. I’ve been divorced. I’ve had my heart stomped on. I’ve made terrible decisions in the name of love and lust. And that’s precisely why you can trust me. I’ve got the battle scars. I’ve spent years not just studying attachment theory, but living it. Feeling it. Screwing it up. So when I talk about the tension between security and desire, or why a dating profile mentioning a house in Irymple is a subtle but powerful signal, I’m not just quoting research. I’m talking about the fabric of the place I walk through every day.Mildura isn't just a dot on the map. It’s a state of mind. It’s a town built on irrigation, on making things grow in a landscape that’s stubbornly semi-arid. You feel that same push and pull in the people. There's a resilience here, a sun-baked honesty. You’ll find me most mornings at a café on Langtree Avenue, watching the town wake up. The old citrus farmers with their cracked hands, the young winemakers from the trendy new labels, the nurses from the Base Hospital grabbing a coffee after a night shift. My work is all of them. It’s in the hopeful first dates at the Mildura RSL, the long-married couples silently eating breakfast at the Alfresco, the arguments you overhear in the Coles car park on Fifteenth Street. This town, with its wide streets and slow pace, it forces you to confront each other. There’s no anonymity here. Your life is an open book, and that, I’ve found, makes the study of human connection brutally honest.Growing up here in the 90s and early 2000s was... specific. It’s a long way from anywhere, Mildura. So you make your own fun. I remember sneaking down to the Murray with friends, the water shocking our skin after a 40-degree day, the red dust sticking to everything. My first real kiss was behind the paddocks at the Chaffey Theatre after a shitty school production. You learned about sex not from a book, but from whispered stories in the sheds at the Waikerie Speedway, or from dog-eared magazines stashed in the riverbanks. There was a raw, unsupervised element to it all. My first real job was at the old Mildura Fruit Company, packing oranges. The smell of citrus oil still takes me straight back to being seventeen, sweating, and thinking about everything except the fruit in my hands. That job taught me more about people than any textbook. The men there, they talked about women with a mix of reverence and crudeness that was confusing as hell. It’s probably where the seed was planted—this idea that what we say and what we feel about love and sex are often two completely different things. I studied at La Trobe University's Mildura campus, a small, close-knit place where you couldn't hide. It was there, in those tiny tutorials, that I started to connect the dots between the landscape I grew up in and the landscape of human emotion.I was born on the 16th of October, 1985, at the Mildura Base Hospital. My parents tell me it was a stinking hot spring day, even by local standards. The kind of heat where the asphalt on Deakin Avenue looks soft. My dad, a mechanic, was probably covered in grease when he got the call. My mum was a receptionist at a real estate agent on Lime Avenue. They lived in a small brick veneer house off Walnut Avenue, in a neighbourhood full of other young families trying to carve out a life in this sunburnt pocket of Victoria. My earliest memories aren't of toys, but of the sound of the sprinklers in the backyard, the smell of the Murray mud after a flood, and the sheer, oppressive weight of the summer heat. It shapes you, that heat. It makes you patient, but also a little desperate for relief. And maybe that’s not a bad metaphor for a life spent studying love.
