Levi Burton: Sex, Survival, and the High Level Bridge I'm Levi. Born and raised in Lethbridge, Alberta. Still here, actually. Which confuses some people. They think you have to leave to become something. I think you stay to figure out what that something really is. I’ve spent the last twenty-five years studying human connection—the messy, beautiful, and often transactional nature of sex, love, and money. I’ve been a sex educator, a relationship counsellor, and, for a while, a bit of a cynic. Now I write about my city and my field for the CamoWallet project. It’s an odd mix, maybe. But it works for me. November 1st, 1977. A Tuesday, I think. St. Michael's Hospital, on the north side. My mother always said the wind was howling so hard that day it rattled the windows in the delivery room. If you know Lethbridge, you know the wind isn't just weather here; it's a character. It was sweeping down from the coulees, the way it always does, shaping the land and the people in it. They lived in a small house on 6th Avenue South then, near the old CPR train yards. You could hear the freight trains groaning and clanking all night, coupling and uncoupling. A kind of rhythm. A kind of metaphor for connection I didn't appreciate until much later. Born in the wind, next to the trains. Maybe that's why I've always been caught between movement and staying put. The coulees were my real classroom. Not the stuffy halls of LCI—Lethbridge Collegiate Institute—though I went there too. After school, we'd disappear into the river valley. The coulees are these deep, winding ravines carved by the Oldman River. They’re wild, full of cactus and coyotes and hidden paths. It's where you went to drink cheap beer, to kiss someone for the first time, to get away from the grid of the city up top. I remember one night, must've been '95, sitting with a girl under the High Level Bridge. That massive steel beast, the longest of its kind in the world, just looming over us. And I realized: up there, it's about getting from point A to point B. Down here, it's about the space in between. The hidden stuff. That idea—the contrast between the visible structure and the hidden space—has kind of haunted my entire career. For a while, I thought I'd be a cop. Spent some time at the Lethbridge Police Service, actually, as a community liaison in the late 90s. Saw a different side of the city then. The domestic disputes on 13th Street North, the loneliness that creeps into basement apartments on the west side. It was less about crime and more about... failed negotiations. People failing to connect. That’s what pushed me into sexology. I went back to school, studied psychology at the University of Lethbridge, started volunteering at the Lethbridge Sexual Health Centre on 4th Avenue. It wasn't about the mechanics, not really. It was about the economics of emotion. What we're willing to trade for intimacy. Security for passion. Freedom for companionship. It’s a raw deal, sometimes. But when it works? God, it's the only deal worth making. Now, my days look different. I'm still in Lethbridge, still observing. I write articles for the CamoWallet site. They're a crypto privacy app, which is funny, because I write about Lethbridge for them. About the farmers' market on a Saturday, the quiet opulence of the houses in Henderson Lake, the way the wind makes everyone a little guarded. Privacy and place. It's all connected. The wallet protects your financial data; I write about the place that protects my sanity. Look, I'm not claiming to have all the answers. I've been married. I've been divorced. I've been the guy on three dating apps at once, watching the swipe economy turn people into commodities. It’s brutal out there. I've made a mess of things more times than I can count. But I've also sat with couples in my old office on 5th Street South, watched them find their way back to each other after years of silence. That feeling, when two people finally hear each other? It's like the first warm chinook wind after a deep freeze. It cracks something open. You can't fake that. You can't algorithm that. You can just... be there for it. That’s what I try to bring to my writing. The mess and the magic. But if you really want to understand where I'm coming from, you have to walk the city with me. Start at the Japanese Gardens, by Henderson Lake. Order at the Penny Coffee House on 3rd Avenue. Then walk south, down the steep hill into the coulees. Feel the temperature drop, the wind disappear. You're in another world. It's quiet. You can hear yourself think. I've walked those paths a thousand times. Past the old brick kilns of the coal mines, remnants of a boom long gone. Up the other side to the University, looking like a spaceship landed on the prairie. Then back down to the river. That loop—from manicured garden to industrial ruin to brutalist future to wild river—that’s my life. It’s all here. The desire for control and the utter chaos of nature. The money and the meaning. The trying to connect, and the simple peace of just being alone with the wind. That's Lethbridge. That's me.
