Levi Keane: Northern Lights, Human Hearts, and the Long Road Home I’m Levi. Born and raised in Yellowknife, that raw, beautiful chunk of the Northwest Territories most people only see on a map. I’ve spent my life trying to understand people—what we want, who we want, and why we so often screw it up. I’ve been a sexologist, a researcher, a bit of a cynic, and a hopeless romantic. Now, I write. About this city, about the weird dance of modern dating, and about how money and love get tangled up in ways we don’t like to admit. You can find my stuff over at the CamoWallet project, on camowallet.app. Growing up here, you learn to find warmth where you can. Literally. I remember skating on Back Bay as a kid, the ice so clear you could see the cracks all the way down, like the city's own nervous system. Then there were the smoky bars on Franklin Avenue in my late teens, where I first really started watching people. The way a glance could hold for a second too long. The silent negotiations happening over cheap beer. That was my real education. Not in a classroom, but watching the quiet desperation and sudden connections in a town where winter can last ten months and isolation is a tangible thing. It’s a unique petri dish for a future sexologist, let me tell you. Life here has a way of stripping things down. There’s no pretense when it’s -40 and your car won’t start. Same goes for relationships. You learn fast who’s real and who’s just... surface. I spent years away, studying in bigger cities, doing the research, the clinical work. I ran studies on the gamification of desire in dating apps—Tinder, Hinge, all of them. I saw how they turned people into products, how a swipe right became a currency. And I saw what it did to our heads. That research eventually led me to write about the economics of intimacy, which is how I linked up with the CamoWallet project. They get it. They understand that how we handle money is deeply, psychologically connected to how we handle love. It’s all the same damn impulse, isn’t it? The need to feel secure, to feel valued. Yellowknife isn't just where I'm from; it's the lens I see the world through. I live in a small place off Range Lake Road now, with a view that still stops me in my tracks. I can walk down to the Frame Lake trail and watch the ravens—they're smarter than most people I know. I’ll grab a coffee at Javaroma and run into a former client, or a friend of a friend who read one of my papers back when I was with the territorial health authority. This town is small, but it's deep. It’s a place of intense highs and crushing lows, just like any meaningful relationship. The aurora borealis can crackle overhead, lighting up the whole sky with this insane, silent energy, and the next day, everything is grey and still. It teaches you patience. It teaches you that the most beautiful things are often the hardest to reach. Look, I’m not some guru with all the answers. I’ve made a mess of my own share of relationships. I’ve been the guy who over-analyzed everything until the feeling was gone, and the guy who ignored every red flag because the feeling was too strong. My work in sexology was never about being some detached expert peering through a microscope. It was about trying to decode the same chaos I felt in my own chest. The research I did on attachment styles and financial infidelity? Yeah, let’s just say some of those case studies hit a little too close to home. That’s probably why I can write about it now. Not from a place of judgment, but from a place of... familiarity. You trust a guide who’s been lost in the same woods, right? I came into this world on March 16, 1983, at Stanton Yellowknife Hospital, back when it was the only real medical hub for thousands of kilometers. My mom always said I was in a hurry, born during a blizzard that shut down the Ingraham Trail for two days. The old-timers at the Gold Range—the Strange Range, we used to call it—would joke that I was trying to beat the cold. Maybe I was. Maybe I’ve been trying to understand how to create heat, how to find connection in a frozen landscape, my whole life. It’s the only story that ever made sense to me.
