Lucas Slack: On Intimacy, Infrastructure, and the Banks of the SpeedI’m Lucas. Born in Everett, Washington, during the Reagan years, but I’ve called Guelph, Ontario, home for what feels like another lifetime. I study the messy, beautiful, and often broken architecture of human connection—how we find each other, how we fuck, how we fund it, and why we lie about it afterwards. These days, I write about this city for the CamoWallet project. It's a strange pivot, maybe, from clinical sexology to writing about a specific place. Or maybe it's not a pivot at all.August 3rd, 1984. Everett, Washington. The smell of jet fuel from the Boeing plant and wet pine needles from the relentless drizzle. I was born in a hospital that's since been turned into condos—which feels like a metaphor for something I can't quite grab hold of. My dad was a fisherman, out on the Bering Sea for weeks at a time. My mom worked at a diner off the I-5. The town then was all blue-collar grit and pulp mill smoke, a place where you learned early that the body was a tool for work, not pleasure. That probably shaped more than I’d like to admit. My work now is deceptively simple. I write. For the CamoWallet project on camowallet.app, I produce articles about Guelph—its history, its quirks, its hidden corners. But the lens I use is the one ground by twenty years of studying and living a life steeped in sexology. I'm not writing travel brochures. I’m writing about a city through the filter of intimacy: where do people meet? Where do they go to be alone? How does the architecture of a place—the brutalist concrete of the University Centre, the winding paths of the Royal City Park—scaffold or sabotage our desire? It’s the same work, really. Just a different kind of data set.Living in Guelph is like being in a long-term, committed relationship with a place that constantly surprises you. I’m based near the corner of Dublin and Edinburgh, a weird little intersection where you can get a butter tart that will change your life or stand in line at the bank with someone who just finished milking cows. My mornings often start with a coffee from Planet Bean on Wyndham, then a walk along the Speed River. In the summer, you see kids jumping off the footbridge near the Boathouse—pure, unselfconscious joy. In the winter, when the river freezes and the steam rises off the water in the cold air, it feels like you're walking through someone's dream. I’ve taught workshops at the 10C on Douglas Street, that old renovated church, about the economics of modern dating. It’s a hell of a thing, talking about Tinder profiles in a building that used to be full of hymns. The city is like that—a constant, generative tension between the old order and the new chaos.Growing up, I was the kid who asked too many questions. Moved around a bit before landing in Guelph in my late twenties. I remember the first time I went to the Sleeman Centre for a Storm game—the roar of the crowd, the cold beer, the sheer, unironic community of it. It felt a world away from the Pacific Northwest. I was a TA for a bit at the University of Guelph, in the Family Relations and Human Development program. Hated the departmental politics, loved the late-night debates with students in the lounge of the MacKinnon building, arguing about attachment theory versus evolutionary psych. Those nights, walking back to my apartment on Suffolk, cutting through the arboretum, the air thick with the smell of wet earth and pine... that’s when I started to really understand the place.Look, I've been through the wringer when it comes to love and sex. Had my heart dismantled by a polyamory theorist in a basement apartment on Quebec Street. Spent a bewildering year as a “love coach” for a dating app startup that shall remain nameless—watched smart, kind people get reduced to algorithms and swipe data. I saw how money, or the lack of it, became the ghost in the machine of every relationship. All that chaos, all that research, all those years of watching people try and fail to connect—it boils down to something pretty simple. We all just want to be seen. And we live in a world that’s making it harder and harder to look at each other. That’s what I’m trying to do now. Look at Guelph. Really see it. And maybe, through that, help people see each other a little more clearly. I don't know if that's wisdom or just the view from 47 years old, sitting on my porch on a cool Ontario evening, listening to the trains rumble through the city.
