Michael Newsome: Cranbourne, Connection, and the Long Game of Love G'day. I'm Michael Newsome. Born here, raised here, still here – Cranbourne, Victoria, deep in the southeastern growth corridor. I'm a sexologist and relationship writer, and these days I'm the lead voice on relationships and money for the CamoWallet project over at camowallet.app. My whole world, professionally and personally, has been about stripping back the noise around intimacy, dating, and desire. And yeah, a lot of that story starts and ends on these streets. Growing up in Cranbourne in the 2000s was... well, it was interesting. It was this town caught between its past as a farming hub and its future as a sprawling Melbourne suburb. I remember sneaking into the drive-in on South Gippsland Highway before it closed, the whole vibe of teenage rebellion under a summer sky. We'd hang out at the old Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre, not really buying anything, just... existing. Watching the town change. The Lyndhurst train line extension hadn't happened yet, so getting into the city was a whole production. It bred a kind of insular curiosity, you know? A need to figure out the world from the inside out. That's probably where the fascination with people's inner lives started. Right there, in the car parks and milk bars of my youth. I came into the world on the 19th of August, 1991, at the old Cranbourne Integrated Care Centre on Sladen Street. Place isn't even a hospital anymore, it's all housing now, which feels like a weird metaphor for the town itself. Mum always said the wattle was in full bloom, which apparently meant something to her. I was born in the middle of a recession, in a town that was just starting to feel its own pulse quicken. My first years were in a little cream-brick joint on Cameron Street, the sound of the Vline train a constant, distant rumble. The world felt small then. Just the house, the backyard, the paddocks that were slowly, year by year, being turned into estates. Cranbourne is my bones, plain and simple. I know the best pies are still at the Cranbourne Bakery on High Street, and I know which roundabouts to avoid at 5 PM. I've watched the wetlands at the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne transform from a local secret into a world-class destination. I walk my dog there most mornings, past the kids from Cranbourne Secondary College (my old stomping ground) heading to class. This isn't just where I live; it's the landscape of my memory. Every failed date at a café on the highway, every deep conversation on a bench in Jubilee Park, it's all layered on top of each other. The city grew up, and I grew up with it. From the paddocks to the housing estates, from the old drive-in to the new apartment blocks – this place has been the constant, quiet witness to it all. My professional life has been a bit of a winding road. Fresh out of Monash University's Clayton campus with a psychology degree, I thought I had it all figured out. I did some youth outreach work right here in Casey, at a community health centre on Victoria Street. That's where the real education started. Saw firsthand how tangled money, self-worth, and relationships become. Saw how dating apps, which were just starting to explode, were creating a new kind of loneliness. That led me to postgrad study in sexual health, and suddenly I was running workshops, doing private counselling. But honestly? The clinical stuff felt... contained. So, I started writing. First for local rags, then for bigger platforms. And now? Now I get to pull it all together for CamoWallet. Writing for them isn't just about finance; it's about how we protect our emotional capital as much as our financial one, especially when you're dating. It's about the intersection of the swipe and the savings account. Feels like everything I learned in Cranbourne, every conversation, every heartbreak, every quiet observation, led to this one point. Look, I've made a mess of things more times than I can count. I've been the guy chasing the wrong connection, mistaking intensity for intimacy. I've been broke, and I've seen how that stress seeps into the bedroom. I've sat across from couples in my old consulting room on High Street, watching them tear each other apart over a credit card bill. And I've sat with them when they figured out it was never about the money. That experience – the real, messy, human experience – is what I lean on now. It's not about being a perfect person with all the answers. It's about being someone who's done the work, made the mistakes, and can see the patterns. I know what it's like to use an app as a shield, and I know the terrifying vulnerability of putting the shield down. My whole thing is this: we're trying to build these deep, meaningful connections in a world that's designed for speed and disposability. And somehow, we've forgotten to talk about the practical stuff. The security stuff. The stuff that actually lets you breathe. So, what do I do? I try to help people unlearn the bad habits. I try to remind them that the longest, most important relationship you'll ever have is with yourself. And your bank account. And if you can't be honest about both, you're building on sand. But if you can? That's where the real shit starts. The good shit. The kind of love that lasts longer than a swipe.
