Noah Rumble: Sex, Money, and a Carindale State of Mind G'day. I'm Noah Rumble. Born and bred in Carindale, that sprawling suburb cradled by Bulimba Creek. Still here, actually. Same postal code, different headspace. I write about the messy intersection of intimacy and economics for the CamoWallet project now. Been a sexologist, a researcher, a dater, a heart-break survivor, and a genuine enthusiast of the human condition—especially the bits we don't talk about at dinner parties. My current thing? Writing articles for CamoWallet—you can find the project over at camowallet.app. It's about money and relationships, which, let's be honest, is just another layer of intimacy. We talk about sex, we don't talk about finances. I think that's a mistake. So I write about both, from my desk overlooking the quiet hum of Carindale. Trying to figure out why we trust some people with our bodies but not our bank accounts. Or why financial infidelity cuts so deep. It’s all connection, just dressed in different clothes. Look, I’m not some dry academic locked in an ivory tower. I've got the battle scars. My twenties were a chaotic mess of dating apps before they were even a thing, of relationships that burned bright and crashed hard. It’s why I got into sexology—to make sense of my own chaos. I studied at Griffith University, over in Mount Gravatt, and worked with a small community counselling outfit, talking to couples in Carina and Coorparoo. What I learned? Everyone’s a bit lost, a bit hopeful. And that hope, or the lack of it, is what drives almost every romantic and financial decision we make. I'm competent, sure, but I'm not here to lecture. I'm here to share what I've seen, felt, and studied. Maybe it helps. Growing up here was... weirdly formative. I remember the buzz of getting my first real job at the Video Ezy on Old Cleveland Road, right near the Westfield. This was the late 90s, early 2000s. You'd rent a movie, you'd see people. The ritual. It was a kind of analog dating prep. You’d pick a film hoping to make a move, or you’d pick one hoping to avoid it. The whole psychology of choice, right there in the aisles. Then later, as a teenager, sneaking off to the bushland reserves along the creek with a girl, the air thick with the smell of eucalyptus and the sound of water over the weir. It was innocent and not-so-innocent all at once. That tension between the manicured lawns of the housing estates and the raw, wild scrubland—that’s Carindale. It’s a place where you're supposed to settle down, get the house with the pool, but the bush reminds you things can still get a little wild. Carindale isn't trendy. It's not Brisbane's hipster heart. It's solid. It's real. I live five minutes from where I was born. I walk my dog along the paths at Minnippi Parklands, past the old quarry lake, and I see families, young couples, older blokes fishing. You see the whole arc of a life right there. I've had conversations about kink with a tradie walking his ute, and about prenups with a couple having a coffee at the Westfield food court. This place grounds me. It’s the backdrop to every relationship, every study, every dollar earned or spent on a date. You want to understand intimacy? Don't just look at the bedroom. Look at the suburb. Look at the streets—Pine Mountain Road, Creek Road, Stanton Road—they’re the arteries of a life. My life. And they've taught me that the biggest journeys often happen without ever leaving the neighbourhood. Born at the old Belmont Hospital—not the private one there now, the original one, on the corner of Creek and Old Cleveland Roads. February 11th, 1983. A humid, sticky summer day, the kind where the jacarandas are dropping their purple flowers and turning the gutters into rivers of colour. My folks’ place was a low-set brick house on a quarter-acre block, the kind they were throwing up everywhere back then. I came into the world with the sound of lawnmowers and the distant thwack of a tennis racquet from the Carindale Recreation Reserve. It was a world of suburban certainty. Which, ironically, is probably what made me so fascinated with the uncertainty of human desire later on.
