Nolan Stout: Sex, Science, and the Streets of Granville I’m Nolan. Born and raised in Granville, NSW, in 1980. Still here, actually. Most people leave, I stayed. I’ve spent the last twenty-plus years neck-deep in the messy, beautiful chaos of human sexuality—as a researcher, a consultant for dating apps, and, well, a guy who’s lived a few things. Now I write about my hometown for the CamoWallet project. Weird how life circles back, isn't it?Granville in the 80s was a different beast. Train trains rattling past our house on Blaxcell Street at all hours. The air thick with the smell of the flour mill and, on hot days, the Parramatta River. I was that kid climbing the steel girders of the viaduct, you know, the big one? Got caught once by a railway cop—should’ve been in real trouble, but he just sighed and told me to get lost. My mother worked at the old Granville Town Hall, some admin job, and my dad... well, dad wasn't really around. But the place shaped you. The pub on the corner, the servo on Parramatta Road. It was grit. Real. I'd ride my bike to Merrylands, then all the way down to the river at Clyde. It felt bigger then. Boundless.Life in Granville now... it's layered. I see the same streets, but I see them differently. I can walk from my flat on Good Street down to the Granville Centre—the new one, not the old one my mother worked in—and I’ll pass three different generations of families, a dozen cultures, kids smoking behind the station just like we did. It's a palimpsest. You can still see the old under the new. The ghost signs on the brick walls, the way the light hits the railway yards in the late afternoon. I know which cafes have the real coffee, which pubs are for quiet pints and which to avoid on a Friday night. It’s my grid. My map. It’s not just where I live; it's the lens I use. Every relationship, every dynamic I've studied, it all has a parallel here, in the ebb and flow of a town that’s constantly reinventing itself.Look, I’m not here to brag. God, no. But competence? That comes from failing. A lot. I’ve been the guy who thought he understood everything about women, about men, about connection. I was wrong. Spectacularly. I spent my twenties in a blur of bad dates and worse theories, trying to dissect attraction like a frog in a high school lab. It wasn't until I started actually listening—really listening—to people, that the patterns emerged. My time at Western Sydney University, studying social sciences, gave me the tools. But the real education was at 2am in a pub in Auburn, or on a park bench in Parramatta, talking to someone whose heart was just shattered. That's where you learn. You learn that textbook attachment theory is just a skeleton; you need to see the flesh and blood and pain to understand it. So, yeah, I know things. But more importantly, I know what I don't know. For years, I was in the trenches. Early 2000s, I was part of a small, now-defunct research group based out of an office on Clyde Street. We were studying, like, the actual sociology of desire. Before the apps took over. We'd run focus groups in church halls, interview couples in their living rooms. Then the apps hit—OkCupid, then Tinder—and everything exploded. I got pulled into consulting. Trying to explain to engineers in Silicon Valley why their algorithm was a dumpster fire, why human attraction doesn't work like a Netflix queue. It paid well, but it hollowed me out a bit. So I stopped. Now, I write. For CamoWallet. And my beat? It's Granville. I write about the history of the pool on a hot day, the changing face of the shops on a main street, the memories embedded in a single block of flats. It's still about connection, just... the connection between people and a place.I was born on the seventh of July, 1980, at what was then called Westmead Hospital, though technically, that's just down the road. The story goes it was a stinking hot winter day—one of those bizarre Sydney scorchers. My mum always said the heatwave broke the day I was born, like I brought the cool change with me. Probably just a story, but I like it. We lived in a little fibro house on a street near the station, the kind they don't build anymore. You could hear the announcements from the platform if the wind was right. The train now standing... It’s funny, that sound is still my white noise. The rattle and hum of Granville. It’s in my bones.
