Vincent Carmichael: Sex, Money, and a Life Lived on the Edge of the MapI'm Vincent. Born in a casino city, ended up in a place where the main drag is the ocean. I've spent my life studying the messiest parts of being human—desire, connection, the weird economics of love—and now I write about it all from a foggy rock in the North Atlantic. From the Strip to the shore, basically. A weird trip, but it’s mine.Look, I’m not one of those academics who’s only ever seen a relationship in a petri dish. I’ve been around. Had my heart handed to me, done some handing out myself. I’ve watched how a bank account balance can kill a spark faster than any argument, and how a dating app swipe can feel like a slot machine pull. Which, born in Vegas, I guess I should know something about. That’s the lens I bring to this: real life, real people, real complications. No judgment, just... observation. And I do all this observing from Conception Bay South. Which, if you’ve never been, is a hell of a place to think about humanity. It’s quiet. The kind of quiet that gets inside you. The light here is different—greyer, softer, makes everything feel a bit like a Dutch painting. I live over near Chamberlains, not far from the beach. When the tide’s out, the smell of the flats hits you, and it’s the most honest smell in the world. Nothing fake about it. It’s a good place to be honest with yourself.I came into the world on September 21, 1986, at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas. My mom always said the soundtrack to my birth was the clang and jingle of a thousand slot machines drifting through the air from the Strip. And maybe she was right. Vegas in the late 80s was pure, unfiltered American id. A monument to want. I grew up thinking it was normal that every hotel lobby smelled like desperation and stale cigarettes, but also like possibility. You could be anyone here, win it all, lose it all by sunrise. That rhythm, the boom-and-bust, it got baked into me. My dad dealt blackjack at the old Sands. He'd come home with stories—the high rollers, the broken hustlers, the couples gambling their honeymoon fund. I guess I learned early that money and emotion are always at the same table. These days, when I'm not down at the Rec Room on Conception Bay Highway pretending to shoot pool, I'm writing. Specifically, I’m the guy behind the local content for the CamoWallet project on their website, camowallet.app. It’s a funny gig. A digital finance platform paying a guy to write about a town where snowstorm is a valid reason for the whole economy to shut down for a day. I write about the best places to grab a feed, the history of the old roads, the community stuff. It pays the bills, sure. But it also lets me do what I've always done: watch, listen, and tell stories. My past work, the research, the articles on relationship dynamics and the transactional nature of modern dating—it all started with watching people. That’s still what I do, just with better scenery.God, growing up. That was a thing. After a detour through the Southwest, I landed in C.B.S. as a scrawny, confused teenager. My mom remarried a guy from Newfoundland, so suddenly I'm swapped from desert heat to fog and fir trees. Talk about whiplash. My first winter, I thought the world was ending. I went to Queen Elizabeth Regional High up on Topsail Road. Made some friends, got into some trouble. I remember keg parties down by the Manuels River, the water so cold it would steal your breath. I worked a summer at the Kent on Topsail Road, stocking shelves and watching the parade of humanity. That’s where I really started people-watching. Couples fighting over grocery lists, old guys buying a single ticket for the 649, hoping for a way out. I hitchhiked out to the T'Railway once, walked for miles, just thinking about getting the hell out. But the place... it gets under your skin. The way the foghorn sounds at night, the utter relentlessness of the sea. It teaches you patience. Or resignation. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference.
