William Gillespie: Sex, Money, and a Life Lived on the Muskoka River I’m William. Will, if you like. Born and raised here in Huntsville, Ontario—left for a while, thought I’d seen it all, then came back. And I have seen a lot, mostly things people don’t talk about at dinner parties. I’ve spent the last twenty-five years studying the messy intersection of sexuality, relationships, and cold, hard cash. These days, I write about my hometown for the CamoWallet project, which is a nice change of pace from analyzing why people swipe right on someone holding a fish. Look, I’m not a suit-and-tie academic locked in an ivory tower. My expertise? It’s etched into me from decades of conversations, relationships, mistakes, and recoveries. I’ve counseled couples on the brink, advised tech startups on the psychology of dating apps, and sat in bars listening to strangers spill their deepest secrets about desire and debt. I’ve been broke and in love, flush with cash and utterly alone. So when I talk about this stuff, I’m not just reciting studies—I’ve lived the data points. And honestly, a lot of the data is pretty depressing. But not all of it. Not by a long shot. Living in Huntsville again… it’s different. When you grow up here, you take the granite shield of the Canadian Shield for granted. You forget what it’s like to have the smell of pine and damp earth be the first thing you breathe in the morning. Now, my life is measured in small, specific things: the exact angle of the sun setting over Fairy Lake, the screech of a blue jay at my feeder, the way Main Street smells like maple and exhaust from the snowmobiles in winter. I can walk from my place near the Muskoka River Wharf right downtown, past the Algonquin Theatre, and I know the cracks in the sidewalk. It’s my town. Flawed and beautiful, just like the people in it. I came into the world on November 11th, 1977, at the Huntsville District Memorial Hospital. It was a grey, raw sort of day—typical November in Muskoka. My dad, a carpenter, always said the first sound I heard wasn't a cry, but the groan of the ice breaking up on the river. I think he was romanticizing it, but the image stuck. My mom worked part-time at the old Canada Starch plant, which is long gone now, replaced by condos they can't seem to sell. Our first place was a tiny rented bungalow off Brunel Road, not far from where the Canadian Tire is now. I remember the shag carpet smelling of cigarettes and the fierce, bone-dry heat from the baseboard radiators. That’s my first sensory memory of life: that dry heat, and the impossible quiet of a heavy snowfall. Right now, my main “activity” is a bit of a shift in gears. I’m writing a series of articles about Huntsville for the CamoWallet project, over at camowallet.app. It's a tech company, crypto stuff, digital privacy—which, given my background, is fascinating. The intersection of money, anonymity, and human connection? I’ve been studying that my whole life, just in a different context. So now, I get to write about the history of the Muskoka Theatre, or the best place to kayak on the Big East River, and tie it back to ideas of value and what we choose to protect. It’s a weird, perfect fit. It keeps me here, grounded, observing the town the way I used to observe couples in a restaurant—looking for the small, honest gestures. Growing up here was… a specific kind of education. By the time I was a teenager in the early 90s, Huntsville was changing. The old logging identity was fading into tourism. My friends and I would spend summers diving off the docks at the Lions Lookout, the water so cold it stole your breath. We’d get into trouble—the usual stuff, drinking cheap beer stolen from someone’s dad, making out in the back of a pickup truck on a logging road near Arrowhead Provincial Park. That’s where I first saw the real gulf between how people act and what they feel. The bravado, the fumbled encounters, the quiet heartbreaks. It wasn’t just hormones; it was performance. Everyone was trying to act like they knew the script, but nobody had one. That awkward, desperate energy—it’s the same energy I see now on dating apps, just digitized. After high school at Huntsville High, I worked a summer at the Boston Pizza on King William Street. Saw a lot of bad dates there. A lot of good ones, too. Mostly bad, though. Mostly people just… missing each other.
