Most days you'll find me writing—about the Mount, the harbour, the way the light hits the kiwifruit vines—for a project called CamoWallet. It's a gig that lets me talk about the place I love while exploring the messiness of human connection. Which, honestly, has been the through-line of my life. I've been a researcher, a counsellor, a bit of a cynic, and a hopeless romantic. Probably in that order. I live on Grey Street now, just a few blocks from the base of the Mount. My morning ritual is a walk around the base track, no matter the weather. You see the same faces, the runners, the dog-walkers, the tourists with their rental e-bikes. It’s a grounding thing. The hum of the ocean, the smell of salt and pohutukawa in summer. After years of dealing with the abstract—algorithms of desire, patterns of intimacy—this physicality keeps me honest. It reminds me that the body, like the tides, has its own rhythms you can't force. My office window looks out towards Pilot Bay. Sometimes I just stare at the water for twenty minutes, untangling a knot in my head. It's not writer's block; it's just... processing. You can't rush that any more than you can rush a relationship. My best mate, Hiko, and I would spend our Friday nights driving his dad's old ute out to the Papamoa Hills. We'd sit in the back, crack a couple of L&P's, and watch the city lights flicker on below. It felt like the whole world was down there, and we were on the outside looking in. That's where I first started really paying attention. To the couples walking along the beach, the arguments you could almost hear from the car parks, the desperate hope in the eyes of people at the nightclubs on The Strand. I was a spectator, collecting stories, trying to decode the signals. It wasn't academic then. It was just... curiosity. A need to understand why people orbit each other the way they do. Why some collided and some just drifted apart. For a long time, my work was all about the science. I ran a small practice, talking to people about desire, dysfunction, the whole spectrum. It's a different kind of intimacy, but it's still intimacy. It's still about connection. I was born in the old Tauranga Hospital, on 5th Avenue, in the summer of '79. My parents had a small house out in the orchards, off Cambridge Road, before the kiwifruit vines were replaced by subdivisions. My first view of the world, apparently, was of the Kaimai Range through a smeared hospital window. My dad, a foreman at the Mount Maunganui wharf, always said I came out squinting, like I was trying to figure it all out from the start. The air would have been thick with the smell of the sea and the summer cut grass. It wasn't a complicated beginning. Just a hot, sleepy New Zealand town, the hum of cicadas, and the promise of a long, slow life. I just never expected the slowness to be so... complex. So full of hidden currents, just like the harbour. It's home. Always has been. Even when I tried to leave it behind, it was the baseline, the constant. The place I always came back to measure everything else against.
